In landing mode, the lower Shield Wing rest flat against the ship and hatches open to allow the rear landing struts to extend. The Shield Wings of the Vermillion Star are heavily armored and designed to provide protection from enemy fire as the ship positions itself (either for attacking or making the jump to hyperspeed). For comparison, the Millennium Falcon has a 0.5 class hyperdrive (meaning it takes half the travel time as normal), most civilian ships are equipped with a class 4 or 5 hyperdrive, and most military ships are equipped with class 1 - 2 hyperdrives. This has since been modified to a class 1.5 hyperdrive. This comes at the cost of its hyperdrive speed, with the ship originally only being equipped with a class 4 hyperdrive (taking 4x the travel time as normal). The Ship is also equipped with substantial sublight engines, allowing it to chase down enemy ships. The Prototype had been built with incredibly strong shields and armour allowing it to survive prolonged combat with a corvette and its fighter escort, however due to the power requirements of the weapons upgrades, the shields have been downgraded somewhat. The Vermillion Star has since been modified with additional weapons, adding 3 front mounted laser cannons (essentially making the 3 pylon mounts into dual cannons) and replacing the Dual Heavy laser turrets with Quad Heavy laser turrets. There are access hatches to reload in the armoury and stair well, this is not a during battle operation. Munitions storage is located under the Stairs, one of the more heavily armoured parts of the ship).
The W-9r Patrol Ship Prototype was equipped with an unusually large amount of weapons for its size, having 5 front mounted laser cannons (1 on each wing tip and one on each of the 3 forward weapon pylons on the left side of the ship), 2 Dual Heavy laser turrets, and 4 front facing torpedo launchers (capable of loading different kinds of torpedoes. The Prototype was stolen out of its dry-dock following the destruction of the DS2, and has been re-named the Vermillion Star. Designed with the intention of countering the Rebel Alliance's use of strike fighters, modified cargo freighters, and small corvette class ships, the project was put on indefinite hold when it was deemed too expensive to mass produce and the projects resources were transferred to the Death Star 2 in orbit around Endor. The Vermillion Star is a modified prototype patrol vessel created by Sienar Fleet Systems for the Galactic Empire.
